IT Jobs In Europe
#1 The Netherlands
Ok, I’ve had several tabs open these last three days, I want to write about this so I can go ahead and close them. You see, things are crazy here in The States or at least they might become that way, so I am not only looking for jobs here in The States but also in Europe. I plan to get out of town (so to speak) if the shit starts to hit the fan. I have been searching for the best country for IT work.
According to a 2023 LinkedIn article, ten European countries are good for IT work. Some of them, I do not believe, are not friendly to Black (African American) folks… and I am not familiar with them, as am with Europe. I will note them here but focus on the ones I’m familiar with.
- London, UK
- Berlin, Germany
- Dublin, Ireland
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Stockholm, Sweden
- Zurich, Switzerland
- Oulu, Finland
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Oslo, Norway
- Tricity, Poland
The two countries I am familiar with are the Netherlands & Switzerland. When I searched, recently, there were several IT jobs listed in the Netherlands but not as many in Switzerland, the same with American IT companies. This article gives some additional information that I found useful…

Additional tips for tech professionals considering moving to Europe:
- Research the job market in the cities you’re interested in. This will help you to understand the types of tech jobs that are available and the salary levels you can expect.
- Get your visa paperwork in order early. The visa process can be complex and time-consuming, so it’s important to start planning ahead.
- Network with tech professionals in the cities you’re interested in. This is a great way to learn more about
As I have decided (for now) to focus on the Netherlands and Portugal, I found this information, about the Netherlands, helpful. Knowledge of Dutch is also not necessary to move to the Netherlands. It is often enough to know English (Intermediate level).
To obtain a residence permit in the Netherlands, you need: to be a certified specialist; find a company willing to provide work; and receive a salary not lower than the established norm.
The article, “Top 10 Countries People Move to for Tech Jobs” lists Brussels, Belgium as number ten on their list. That stands out to me because that is where David went. Now I’m not sure if he moved there or was just visiting but still… it’s nice. Plus, I’ve been there, when we lived in Germany.

I then searched the IT community in Portugal, after Mom said that Robin Roberts (from GMA) was talking about Black-Expats living there. A screenshot is posted above. Below is Google’s generative AI response and below that image is a screenshot of Glassdoor’s 5, 578 jobs listed as of June 2024.

In my next “IT Jobs In Europe” article I want to talk about American companies with offices/jobs in Europe. I believe Google and Apple have jobs (offices) in the Netherlands and maybe even in Switzerland.
