Biking - Cross Creek Park

Biking - Cross Creek Park

I’ve been reminding myself of how much I loved bike riding. That time riding my bike all around our neighborhood in Kansas City and Ft. Bragg. Also, on my birthday, through Rock Creek Park, in the DC area. Biking riding is one of many receipts that show how much I LOVE moving my body (and being outdoors). Riding my bike is still a love of mine but there are no parks, like Rock Creek Park, in my current area.

I taught myself how to ride a bike (I also taught my neighbor-friend to ride her bike, but that’s for another time). I learned that when you first get on the bike it takes concerted effort to get that bike moving/rolling. You have to balance the bike with one foot on the ground and the other on the pedal. Then you have to push with your one foot on the ground. Once you are going a little you can put that foot on the pedal. Pedaling takes a lot of effort, at this point, to get the bike moving at a steady pace… so you can stay balanced. It’s so much fun, after all of that work in the beginning.

What I Learned From Biking

All my time riding my bike I have learned so much, things I can apply to other areas of my life. I never focused on how tough it was to get the bike going. I was just so excited to be able to ride and explore and go fast. Those are the things I focused on. I can do the same in looking for a job, organizing my room, and losing weight.

The time riding through Rock Creek Park, on my birthday, shows me how much I absolutely love riding a bike, being outside and moving my body. We rode from an entry point in Maryland, all the way down to DC (a long way). The whole time people kept smiling and saying hi to me (us), I couldn’t figure out why. It wasn’t until walking around DC for a minute and realizing that my checks were hurting. I had a HUGE smile on my face all the way down to DC!

Yes, being outside is nourishing to me. At 50+ I’m not so much into riding my bike, but I can see how finding another outdoor activity is important for me, to nourish my soul.
