Is DeepSeek Here To Stay?
I was so busy with all the News yesterday that I forgot about writing my AI article (in fact I forgot that yesterday was Saturday). On Friday I saw the announcement that Amazon had already added DeepSeek Models to AWS. This had me wondering if DeepSeek is here to stay. Didn’t Trump announce his $500 Billion AI Investment and about a week later DeepSeek sparked an AI stock selloff? A week after the AI stock selloff Amazon has added DeepSeek to their web services? Is DeepSeek here to stay or was Amazon as excited as I was about DeepSeek that it rushed to add it to their services?
According to CNBC, the “Chinese generative AI DeepSeek surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT as the No. 1 free app last week, with a million downloads, alarming national security experts given Chinese government requirements for domestic firms to share data with the PRC”. As Amazon adds DeepSeek to their web services, others are concerned about the potential security risks, with some Cybersecurity firms already discovering vulnerabilities. In this same article, Dewardric McNeal, managing director and senior policy analyst at risk management firm Longview Global,” is just as worried about the ‘bigger picture’ competition between nations.”
I initially was excited about the open source part because it’s been a struggle to find any details of OpenAI’s source code on ChatGPT. But as with any new technology, I think it’s best to walk with your eyes open. It’s normal for new technology to have some bugs, that is why I usually wait a while before using it. I do have to wonder about the thought behind Amazon accepting so quickly. DeepSeek has been around since 2023, maybe Amazon was already familiar with it? Whatever the reason, I continue to be excited by the lower cost and being open source. I think it will be great if DeepSeek is here to stay… it remains to be seen though.
